Based in the outskirts of Groningen, Dutch studio Maki was created when graphic designer Matthijs Maat teamed up with illustrator Kim Smits in 2005.

Complementary in their life and work, Matthijs Maat and Kim Smits carry out projects as varied as their clients: illustrations for magazines and children’s books, brand identities, customised footwear, CD covers, packaging, posters, flyers and tattoos.

The studio stands out by its ability to impart a playful, cheerful energy to each piece. Keen contributors to Threadless, an online platform for selling tee-shirts, they also wrote and designed the book Custom Shoes.
